Sigurd Felde

IFMGA Mountain Guide

Sigurd Felde was born and raised with the mountains of Sogn, Norway as his playground. With more than 20 years experience as a geologist and IFMGA mountain guide, those same mountains have now become his office.

When did you know you wanted to be a mountain guide?

I have always felt at home in the mountains and fascinated by their mystique. My curiosity to explore led me up and out into nature myself. Sharing the wonder of the mountains with others has always been an important piece of my best experiences - so from a pretty young age, I decided that being a mountain guide was the only profession for me.

You've climbed and skied around the world. What is your favorite place?

My backyard here in Sogn, Norway. The more I ski here, the better the area becomes to me.

How has your approach to the mountains changed over your guiding career?

More experience also brings more confidence in my decision-making in steep terrain - based on the knowledge I've acquired in my career. So I feel that I'm only becoming better and better every year.

What conditions are you looking for when deciding to enter or avoid avalanche terrain?

The snow must be unbound and loose, without layering in the most critical upper layer - the first meter - as well as no sign for wind transportation on the surface. With that said, I am always conservative when I enter avalanche terrain, and am very aware of where I am on the mountain. Beyond that, I always make a solid plan, with good alternatives in case the conditions are not as safe as expected. Finally, I avoid all terrain traps.

Why do you use Safeback SBX?

To make my workplace safer.

How does SBX fit into your understanding of snow safety?

Safeback's method and technology for moving air through is very interesting to me. At first, I was surprised that it was actually possible to pump so much air out of the snowpack. SBX represents a new way of approaching the suffocation problem in snow burial, without radically changing how I prepare for or move through the mountains.

Notable Accomplishments

- Skiing on all 7 continents - Pawar Himal (first ascent) - Ama Dablam - First attempt on K2 (2005) - Trollveggen (the Troll Wall) in the winter - Vettisfossen waterfall - Monte Fitz Roy, Patagonia - Great Trango Tower

Sigurd's Go-to Backpacks

Why this backpack?

For years, I've been working with Bergans to make a backpack that could meet my needs as a guide in all seasons. This backpack includes all of the features I need to do my job, and nothing more, and uses high-end textiles to keep weight down without sacrificing durability. Since SBX is removable, I can use the same pack when going into avalanche terrain in the winter as I do guiding summer climbing and alpine treks.
